Different Working Principles

The working principle of a servo motor is to change the position and speed of the motor by receiving electrical pulse signals from an external controller. The controller transmits the electrical pulse signal to the motor, controlling the rotor to rotate a certain angle to accurately control the output angle of the motor within a given range.

Different Internal Components

The feedback component inside a brushless DC motor is a hall sensor, which has relatively low accuracy and can’t achieve high-precision control requirements. The feedback component inside a DC servo motor is an encoder, which has higher accuracy and can achieve high-precision position, speed, and torque control.

Different Size, Poles and Wave

We usually make DC brushless motors as 8-pole with square wave, and dc servo motor to be 10-pole or 20-pole with sine wave. Due to the high density of DC servo motors, the size of the servo motor will be smaller than bldc motor based on same parameters, which can help to save more space.

Different Speed Control Range

The highest torque and efficiency points for a bldc motor during long-term operation is based on the point of rated speed. The torque will be reduced during speed slowed down from the rated speed. The torque is very low from 0 to 400 rpm and may can’t drive normal loads. DC servo motors can achieve constant torque speed control from 0 to 3000 rpm.

Different performance for locking torque

Brushless DC motors do not have locking torque and are not suitable for lifting operation modes as they are prone to slipping. DC servo motors have locking torque and can be matched with brake units and braking resistors to meet lifting applications.

Different control way

BLDC motor can support 0-5V analog voltage speed regulation or external potentiometer speed regulation. It’s easy to realize start, stop and forward and reverse rotation through the driver. DC servo motor can support pulse, analog and CAN bus control, and can easily implement speed mode, torque mode and position mode. And there is independent PC software
